Understanding Cystoid Macular Oedema (CMO)
What is Cystoid Macular Oedema?
Cystoid Macular Oedema (CM) is a condition that affects the macula, a crucial part of the eye responsible for sharp, central vision. The macula is located in the middle of the retina and so anything which affects the macular is likely to affect your central vision. In CMEO, fluid accumulates in the macula either below the layers of the retina or in between them, causing it to swell and form cyst-like spaces. This may cause distortion in your central vision or a general drop in vision.
What causes Cystoid Macular Oedema?
CMO can be associated and caused by various eye conditions, including:
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Uveitis (inflammation in the eye)
- Retinal vein occlusion
- Post-cataract surgery
- Post-Vitreoretinal surgery
What are the usual symptoms of Cystoid Macular Oedema?
If you are experiencing CMO, you may notice:
- Blurred or distorted central vision
- Colours appearing less vibrant
- Difficulty reading or recognising faces
What are the treatment options?
Eye Drops
Anti-inflammatory medications
Injections into the eye
Laser therapy
Not one treatment is the right one for all CMO’s. Prof. Stanga and his team, following an in-depth Vitreoretinal examination involving the latest in OCT imaging technology, will be able to recommend a personalised treatment plan to suit your condition.
How is it Diagnosed?
Ophthalmologists diagnose Cystoid Macular Oedema using an imaging test optical coherence tomography (OCT) and to assess its severity. At The Retina Clinic London, Prof. Stanga and his team use the latest in OCT technology to acquire high quality cross-sectional scans of your macula to assess the amount of CMO, what treatments are required, and how often.
What is the prognosis normally for Cystoid Macular Oedema?
With proper treatment, many people with CMO experience improved vision. Regular ophthalmic follow-ups are crucial to monitor progress and adjust treatment as needed. Therefore, it is crucial that you adhere to the treatment plan prescribed by Prof. Stanga and his team.
